Description

The extremely robust and outdoor-suitable Petromax Atago is an absolute all-rounder and can be used as a grill, oven, stove or fire bowl. Thanks to the stepless air supply and temperature control, cooking and grilling under the open sky succeed in new quality!

Ready for use with just one handle
Due to the unique folding mechanism, the Petromax Atago is ready for use with just one handle. And just as quickly it is folded up again. With a height of only 15 cm when folded, it can be stored excellently and space-saving.

Effective heating with the "chimney effect"
The highly sophisticated design of the Atago makes it possible to make optimum use of the chimney effect. By means of the continuously adjustable air supply, the temperature can be regulated as desired, while a maximum opening ensures an exceptionally fast heat-up. In addition, the round recesses in the material ensure optimal ventilation.

Unique two-cylinder design
Due to the double-walled design, the Petromax Atago is not only a special eye-catcher, but also stores the heat inside so effectively that the outer cylinder hardly heats up even during prolonged operation.

Numerous options
Charcoal, charcoal briquettes and firewood are suitable for firing up. The Atago offers the following three modes of operation:

... as a grill
The Petromax Atago can be used quite classically as a grill, fired by charcoal or briquettes. A matching grill grate is included.

... as a stove or oven
The Petromax Atago can also be used with the Dutch Oven or wok. To do this, simply place the cast iron fire pot (e.g. the Petromax ft3, ft6 or ft9) on the glowing briquettes in the Petromax Atago. The Atago encloses the fire pot and thus ensures an optimal heat yield in combination with the cast-iron fire pot. The wok, on the other hand, is placed directly on top of the round opening of the Petromax Atago. The Atago can be expanded to a convection oven: With the help of the additionally available convection dome you can prepare pizza.

... as a fire bowl
After the Petromax Atago has been used to prepare food, a cozy campfire for the evening can now be lit directly in the Atago. The round shape makes it particularly easy to pile up firewood and brushwood in a pyramid shape.

Frequently asked questions

What is special about the Atago?

The Petromax Atago offers an impressive range of functions that make it an extremely versatile outdoor tool. As a barbecue, the Atago can be operated with charcoal or briquettes, and a suitable grill grate is included in the scope of delivery.

It also functions as an oven or stove by placing a cast-iron Dutch oven, such as the Petromax ft3, ft6 or ft9, on the glowing briquettes in the Atago. This configuration enables optimum heat yield and opens up the possibility of preparing a variety of dishes outdoors.

The Atago can also be used as a fire bowl to create a cozy campfire after cooking. Its round shape makes it easy to stack firewood and brushwood, which makes it particularly easy to use as a fire bowl.

How quickly is the Petromax Atago ready for use and stowed away again?

The Petromax Atago is characterized by a unique folding mechanism that makes it an extremely practical companion. The Atago can be made ready for use effortlessly with just one hand movement.

This speed of handling makes it particularly attractive for spontaneous outdoor activities where quick preparation is crucial. After use, the Atago can be folded up again just as quickly. The compact size of just 15 cm when folded allows for space-saving storage, which is particularly advantageous when storage space is limited.

How do I put the Atago into operation correctly?

With a quick tug, pull the sling bar of the Atago upwards. This movement causes three legs to extend and you bring the Atago into its operating position. To light the Atago, place a few kindling cubes on the base of the Atago as required. Open the air supply completely and place the charcoal grate on the inserts provided and place the desired number of briquettes on the charcoal grate.
Carefully light the solid barbecue lighter and allow the briquettes to glow through until they reach the typical white color. It can take up to 30 minutes for the coals to glow through. The Atago is then ready for cooking. Thanks to its design, the Atago generates a powerful heat and you need fewer coals than you think. All you need to light a fire in the fire bowl is some tinder or birch bark.

How many coals do I need in the Atago?

The Atago is a very efficient cooking zone. Thanks to its sophisticated design, heat is not lost and you need fewer coals for cooking. So if you want to generate a bottom heat of 180 °C, you would usually need 8 coals for an ft6 (with Petromax Cabix Plus ) and only approx. 6 coals when using the Atago. The number of coals depends on the size of the pot, the type of coals and the temperature scale. As a rule of thumb, 30% fewer coals are required if you use your Dutch Oven in the Atago. Our charcoal table gives you a precise overview.

Which Petromax pans fit perfectly with the Atago?

The optimum pan for the Atago has a diameter of 30 cm. The Petromax fire pans and grill fire pans in the corresponding size are ideal in combination with the Atago. Smaller or larger pans or wrought-iron pans can easily be heated on the grill grate or the separately available cooking cross. The poffertjes pan can easily be placed on the top edge of the Atago. If you have a Dutch oven in size ft6 or ft9, you can place the lid on the back of the rim of the Atago and also use it as a pan. In addition to the classic pans, special shapes such as poultry roasters, bundt pans, potato roasters or the muffin tin also make it easier for you to prepare hearty or sweet dishes. These are simply positioned on the charcoal grid. In combination with the convection dome, you can also benefit from all-round heat.

Is the Atago better suited for a Dutch Oven with feet or one without feet?

If you have already cooked on coals with a Dutch oven, you will know that the Dutch oven with feet is ideal for this. The feet provide the ideal distance from the coals or embers and the pot is stable on the floor. If you cook with the Atago in the future, you have a choice. If you want to place small cast iron pots (ft0.5 - ft4.5) on coals in the Atago, it is advisable to use pots with feet. Large pots or pans can be placed on the grill grid or the separately available cooking cross.
Handling pots without feet is somewhat easier here. However, you can also place small pots on the grill grate and cook with a little more distance from the coals without any problems. The ft6 and ft9 Dutch ovens fit perfectly with the Atago, with or without feet. You therefore do not need a special pot for the Atago, as it can be easily combined with all Petromax cast iron products.

Which carbon is the best for the Atago?

You can operate the Atago with standard charcoal. The Petromax Cabix Plus was also developed for efficient consumption of fuel. These are highly compacted and have a wave-like surface structure for free air circulation around the charcoal briquette.
This means that you need fewer coals to reach the desired temperature than with conventional coal and therefore consume less coal. You can find out more about the exact coal distribution in our coal table. For use in the Atago, you need approx. 30 % less charcoal.

What is the best way to store the Atago?

Stainless steel is a particularly pure material. Nevertheless, stainless steel requires a dry place where it is stored without high humidity. If you leave your Atago unprotected outdoors, undesirable effects will very quickly become apparent, especially if there are still ash residues inside. In combination with moisture, this leads to a chemical reaction that causes rust. Storage together with other types of steel is also not advisable in order to avoid a reaction. Therefore, after cleaning, store your Atago separately in a dry place, ideally in the appropriate transport bag.

How do I clean the Atago properly?

The Petromax Atago is a permanently reliable companion for your outdoor adventures. You can make a big contribution to this yourself, because proper care and storage are the be-all and end-all for the longevity of your mobile outdoor cooking stove. Here's what to do when you've finished cooking with the Atago:
1. before you start cleaning, fuel materials and the appliance must be completely cool. Make sure that the Atago has cooled down completely.
2. grasp the opposite areas of the outer cylinder with both hands. Then slowly pull the outer cylinder upwards to allow the inner cylinder and legs to retract.
3 Dispose of the cooled ashes properly and sweep out the remains with a hand brush if necessary.
4. once the coarse ash residue has been removed, remove the fine ash dust with a damp cloth. Immediately afterwards, wipe the wiped-out Atago completely dry with a cloth. For special care, you can use the organic cleaner for soot and traces of fire and give the stainless steel surface of the Atago a new shine. However, do not use sharp objects or aggressive cleaning agents.
5. you can easily clean the grates with a standard barbecue brush made of brass bristles (no steel bristles).
6. after cleaning, it is best to store the Atago in the appropriate transport bag made of ripstop fabric in a dry place.
Tip:The Atago is sharp-edged in places due to the manufacturing process. We therefore recommend wearing protective gloves during the cleaning process.

How strong is the downward heat development?

Even if the heat development is particularly efficient and high temperatures prevail in the inner cylinder, your base remains well protected thanks to the structural insulation. Nevertheless, you should bear in mind that this is a fireplace and that general safety conditions apply.
Place the Atago on a fireproof surface and keep a sufficient distance from flammable objects. However, the heat development downwards is so low that the Atago can be operated on a table without any problems. Some of the legs are very sharp-edged, protect

Which Dutch Oven fits in the Atago?

All Dutch ovens from ft0.5 to ft9 can be positioned in the Atago. Up to a Dutch Oven size ft4.5, there is sufficient clearance to the edge of the Atago. The Dutch Ovens ft6 and ft9 fit perfectly in the Atago and are flush with the sides. The heat development is particularly effective with these two pot sizes.
When cooking, however, make sure that you have the air supply fully open. This ensures that the charcoal briquettes have enough oxygen to glow. Turn the lever to the right and only then place the ft6 or ft9 in the Atago.
