Fire bowls

Fire bowls are popular for cozy evenings outdoors. They create an inviting atmosphere for social gatherings with family and friends.
You can light a fire outdoors in a safe and controlled manner without having to build a permanent fire pit.

A fire bowl is a good alternative to a campfire: it is flexible, portable and allows you to have a controlled fire without having to build a permanent fireplace. This makes it easy to find a place in the garden or on the go. However, a fire bowl can have many more functions than just making a fire. A fire bowl can be a brasero, barbecue or even a fully-fledged cooking area. Petromax fire bowls offer you all these possibilities.

Whether at home, camping, bushcrafting or fishing, the Petromax fire bowls can be adapted to your needs and provide you not only with warming flames but also with sophisticated options for grilling, roasting and cooking.

What can you do with a fire bowl?

With a fire bowl, also known as a brasero, you can create a number of delights for young and old. Bread on a stick or roasted marshmallows are among the classics. So that you can find exactly the right fire bowl for your area of use, there are two fire bowls in the Petromax range that follow different approaches and offer you different possibilities: the Petromax Atago and the Petromax Barbecue and Fire Bowl.

This is what you can do with Petromax fire bowls:

How much does a fire bowl cost?

The costs for fire bowls vary widely and depend on the material composition, construction and additional functions. The size is also decisive. The Petromax barbecue and fire bowls are available in three sizes; they can be stacked on top of each other so that the lower fire bowl can heat up the one above it. This allows you to use the grill plate even if you do not have the option of an open fireplace. The smallest of the German-made barbecue and fire bowls has a diameter of 38 cm. The 3-in-1 all-rounder is the Petromax Atago with its low-smoke burning method and all-round equipment - winner of the bronze medal of the International Barbecue Award for innovative performance in the barbecue category. It can be combined with almost all Petromax Dutch Ovens, cast iron pans, forged pans and special shapes and can be extended with the Petromax convection dome.

How big should a fire bowl be?

Unlike a fixed fire pit, a fire bowl can be moved to a different location from time to time - always at a sufficient distance from bushes, trees or shrubs, of course. This is an important point when choosing the right size.

Another point is the intended use. Would you like to entertain your family with a barbecue on the Barbecue and fire bowl you should plan enough space for this. You should also take note of the different heat zones on the plate, which allow you to grill with precision. You have direct heat on the inside and can roast gently in the outer zones.

You do not have to worry about the packing size: Even if the Petromax fire bowl becomes larger in diameter, depending on your choice, the height of approx. 5 cm remains the same in transport condition. So you can also stow it in shallow spaces. A fire bowl should therefore be large enough for you to have enough space for your plans and at the same time meet the requirements of the environment.

Which fire bowl is the best?

When choosing your fire bowl, individual criteria based on your needs are decisive. Quality plays a decisive role - after all, you want to enjoy your fire bowl for as many years as possible.

Robust steel such as that used for Petromax barbecue and fire bowls is resistant to high temperatures. The strength of the steel used is important here. Steel is therefore a material that is ideally suited for fire bowls because it is particularly durable. The steel fire bowls are manufactured in Germany.

Stainless steel, such as the Petromax Atago, is particularly resistant to rust and remains visually appealing for a long time. Nevertheless, ash in combination with water leads to a reaction that can cause rust, so it is important to remove all ash residues from the Atago after it has cooled down and to store it in a dry place.

However, the material is not the only criterion. The size of the fire bowl is also crucial. The fire bowl should be positioned so that it is far enough away from heat-sensitive materials, so the size should be chosen to suit the conditions of your usable area for the fire bowl. A good fire bowl also ensures a safe distance from the ground: the Atago has integrated heat protection that insulates it from the ground, whereas the barbecue and fire bowl creates sufficient distance from the ground thanks to its leg height.

In addition to the basic requirements of material and size, it is your individual needs that make a fire bowl the best fire bowl for you. The corresponding accessories are ideal for adventures on the go: we offer you the right transport bag for all mobile fire pits.

Find out now which Petromax fire bowl is the best for you: the Atago or the barbecue and fire bowl.

Can you barbecue in a fire bowl?

If you are an absolute barbecue pro and already know that you want to do more than just make a fire in a fire bowl, then you are well advised to use both the Petromax Atago and the barbecue and fire bowl, because with these two fire bowls you can barbecue at any time.

With the grill and fire bowl you grill on a grill plate, with the Atago on the included grill grate over charcoal or wood fire. This gives you two fire bowls that will accompany you on every barbecue adventure thanks to their ideal transport dimensions.

Which is better a fire basket or a fire bowl?

The terms fire basket and fire bowl are sometimes difficult to distinguish. Basically, a fire basket is a vase-shaped structure made of bars. The open side design ensures a constant supply of oxygen, which enables a particularly high flame pattern.

A fire bowl, on the other hand, mainly has a closed body and can be shaped like a plate, bowl or even a fountain. The boundaries are now blurred and many fire bowls have air holes for better combustion.

Basically, the fire in a fire bowl is easier to handle and control thanks to the closed surround, especially if you need to keep your distance from the neighbors or surrounding bushes and shrubs.

The risk of sparks or small logs falling out is also less with a fire bowl than with a fire basket and should be considered when deciding between a fire basket or fire bowl. With the Petromax grill and fire bowl and the Petromax Atago you have maximum fire enjoyment, while the resulting ash is safely collected at all times.

How do you burn in a griddle plate?

How to burn in the Petromax barbecue and fire bowl correctly:

Only burn the bowl outdoors. It must never be burned indoors - there is a risk of fire and suffocation.
Put a highly heatable vegetable fat or cooking oil in your grill bowl so that the base is well covered.
Place it over your fire and when the bowl is hot, add a generous amount of salt.
Stirring occasionally, spread the oil and salt mixture over the entire surface. If the frying surface of your grill pan turns dark in places or over a large area, the typical patina has formed. Now remove the fire bowl from the campfire and leave it to cool. Rinse the grill tray with hot water and carefully remove any residue with a cloth. Finally, dry the plate well and oil it again. In addition to the oils mentioned above, we recommend the Petromax care paste for cast and wrought iron for the stoving process. Then carry out the stoving process twice more.
Then dry the bowl well and finally grease it well with the oil or Petromax Care Paste for Cast and Wrought Iron.
Your grill pan is now ready for use.
Petromax pans and pots made of cast iron do not need to be baked on by you. We have already taken care of this process for you. So you can start your cooking adventure straight away with all Petromax cast iron products.

If your patina is damaged and you need to burn it in again, you can easily do this with the Petromax cast iron and wrought iron pans as well as with the grill and fire bowl using the care paste for cast and wrought iron.
