What is a Dutch Oven?
A Dutch Oven is a thick-walled pot made of cast iron with a heavy, tightly fitting lid. Sounds simple – and it is. That’s exactly what makes it so special.
The cast iron ensures that heat is absorbed evenly, stored, and released steadily over a long period. No hotspots and no temperature drop when the lid is briefly opened. The pot works quietly, controlled, and reliably. Ideal for anything that requires time and patience.
The lid is much more than a simple closure: it traps steam inside, preserving flavors and moisture. On many models, including those from Petromax, it can be turned over and used as a pan – and when used outdoors with briquettes, glowing coals are placed directly on top to create even top heat.
The pot is known by various names: Dutch Oven, Dopf (short for "Dutch Topf"), Camp Oven, Black Pot, or simply cast iron pot. The names vary, but the principle remains the same.
